have jewelry dipped

alright, here we have a piece of kovar whichis a machined part from an iron/cobalt alloy from a potential client in india and we aregoing to demonstrate how to use the jewel master to plate 1 micron of hard, type iigold onto a kovar item. i’ve got rack that we’ve made which holds the two top holesin the item. the jewel master is setup up for doing stainless steel with the electrocleanin the first beaker, the woods nickel strike and a nickel anode in the second beaker andthe hard type ii gold in the third beaker. the temperature is about right, it is up to100 degrees. so, we’ll begin with the first step which is electroclean. what the electrocleandoes is make the surface hydrophilic and wet out and removes any remaining residue or debris.next we’ll rinse and look at it to check

for water breaks-we’ll make sure the waterisn’t beading off. next we’ll go into the woods nickel strike, i’ll do that forabout 15-20 seconds. come out, rinse, and then we’ll go into the final distilled waterrinse that we use before we go into the gold solution. now i’ll go into the gold solution and the voltage is preset at 2.72 volts, we are running about 210 milliamperes of current. to put on 1 micron of gold will take about 8 minutes in this particular solution. ok,now it has been about 8 minutes so what we’ll

do is we’ll take it out, rinse it, we’lldry it with alcohol and warm air and weigh it. we will check the thickness by gravimetricanalysis.
