hi! this is toby with hmc electronics. let'stake a look at the mantis compact from vision engineering. we will start off with a general overviewof the mantis compact and it's rather unique design that you see right out of the gate.there are no eyepieces. there's this viewing window through which you see your magnifiedproduct. so rather than sitting and staring into two eyepieces, you're simply sittingand looking through this window and seeing a crystal clear image of your product. as far as any adjustments. if you think abouton a microscope you'll have the eyepieces, the turrets, that need to adjusted in andout for your interpupillary distance and comfort.
on the vision unit, you've just got that onedial here. adjust it for the operator, once it's set it's good, you just look down throughand you've got a perfect crystal clear image. one thing to note, as with all other microscopesthat are out there, your spacing between the board and the lens is a fixed distance. sospend some time getting your height from your product set up. the 2x has a different workingdistance than the 4x, 6x, and 8x. in fact those are all the lenses that are availablewith this unit. taking a look at the lenses now. they areinterchangeable by locking in and locking out from under here. simply taking your lens, lining it up, and it's nice and solid and in place. one thing worth noting is the pricelisted for a vision system never includes
the cost of a lens. you can spend anywhereon a compact from a couple hundred to a few hundred dollars for a lens. and we'll showyou those up on the screen along with their part numbers. with the mantis compact, changing of magnificationis done by simply removing one lens, grabbing out in this instance our 6x--and you'll noticethe lenses get longer as they get into a higher magnification--taking it and putting underthere, threading it tight. you don't have to use a massive amount of force, just a slight30-degree turn and you're ready to go. a standard microscope will have a lightingoption, so you'll be either getting fluorescent, led lighting array, or fiber optic lightingarray. with the mantis compact here, your
lighting array is built in, you've got yourlighting panel right under there, which is definitely enough light to view your product.when you look at microscopes and light sources they come with and the masses of light thatthey're throwing down on a board, you might look at this and say, "well jeez, that's notan awful amount of light." i can tell you from just doing some checking with the boardsthat we have here, you'll be amazed at the amount of that light that is actually comingthrough the optical path, and how clear and crisp that image is without it throwing amassive flooded area of light. because this is led--unlike the old mantisunits that are out there where you actually had a fan in there because it had to coolthe bulbs off--there's no fan in here. it's
completely silent. these bulbs are guaranteedto last about 10,000 working hours, so really no need to be worrying about stocking sparebulbs or anything like that. very quickly looking at the setup time ona mantis compact. getting this unit out of the box that it comes in and getting it setup is a very simple set up process. the arm has a c-mount clamp in the back. clamp thatdown to your bench top. this then slaps right on. then back here if you peel back this kindof neck area, you will see that there are two screws. lock those in. attach your head.attach the power cable. and you're off to go. not to say that a regular microscope doesn'ttake a very, very long time to set up. but
definitely in getting this one set up justin here, total set up time was only about five minutes. if you have any other questions on the mantiscompact, or if you are interested in its big brother, the mantis elite, we have a videofor that--but if you do have questions after watching both of those videos, you are welcomeas ever to give us a call or drop us an email. thank you very much, and happy soldering!

elite facts presents 11 spot the difference images 11. the temple we’re gonna start off with something simplehere folks. here we have a very oriental shrine with 3differences between the two pictures. the picture on the left is the original, theone on the right is has been changed. can you spot the difference? feel free to pause any time throughout thisvideo if it helps.
take your time, we’re in no rush. look around the shrine itself, at all thelittle details, maybe along the rooftop, see if every single tile is still in place. if you’re done searching, then allow usto draw your attention towards the right of the frame, with the big white building… there are two windows missing. speaking of missing windows… the lower window is missing 2 of it’s segments. and to wrap it off…
the pot that was originally on the left isnow located on the right. see, that wasn’t to bad right? well, things are only going to get harderfrom here on out. 10. the pop star here we have miss hannah montanna herself, miley cyrus. but there are 4 differences between the twopictures. the one on the left is the original, the oneon the right has been changed. can you find them all?
don’t worry if you can’t find them all, after all “everyone makes mistakes. everyone has those days.†get it? it’s… it’s one of her songs… why do i know that? anyway, are you done? alright, let's do this. firstly, the shooting star on her top…
it’s gone. if you shift your gaze to her stomach, youwill see… her belly button is missing. aha! this proves that pop stars are geneticallygrown! (cough) oh, sorry, don’t know what came over me… if we head ever south… you’ll notice that the pink band aroundher waist is now purple. and finally…
her bracelets and other assorted jewelry aroundher wrist is missing. there you have it. now from one artist to another group of singingstars. 9. the cross road look at that, the iconic image of sergeantpepper’s lonely hearts club band… or “the beatles†to you and me. this was the cover for their album “abbeyroadâ€, but there has been 4 changes made. the original is on the left, the edited oneis on the right.
but what has changed? beatle fans might get this quicker than anyoneelse, but don’t let that get you down. just be glad i’m struggling to come up with“beatles†puns. now, here are the answers. mccartney, 2nd from the left is missing hiscigarette, which is actually something that was removed in later releases of the realalbum... he is also wearing shoes in this shot. why he wasn’t wearing shoes to being with,we’ll never know... if you direct your attention to the top rightcorner, the building that was in the background
has disappeared. a street light is now missing. now that the fab four has cleared the road, let's jump in a car and speed off to the next picture. 8. the car driving along in our automobile, having awhale of a time. but what’s this? another spot the difference puzzle.
the original is on the right, with the editedone on the left. and that’s why i’ve been telling you whichis which so far. sorry if it gets confusing. in any case, see if you can spot the 5 differencesbetween the two. we’ll give you a moment… that should do. here are the differences. firstly, the logo for the make of car “kiaâ€is missing… the licence plate is also missing 3 numbers… the front wheel has turned a shade of blue…
the logo on the building in the backgroundhas gone… and this strange thing has disappeared too. at first i thought it was a building, butit’s too transparent to be a building. does anyone know what it is? comment below and let us know. 7. the pastel piece here we have a lovely lady in a very busyroom. there's a lot of detail here so good lucktrying to spot the 5 differences.
the one on the left is the original one, theone on the right is edited. again, there's a lot of detail, so try andnotice everything. just try not to strain your eyes. you think you got it? well, here it is. the ladies shoes have changed from green toblue… the red dresser is missing a handle… there is a gnome in the trash. huh, didn’t think i’d be saying that wheni woke up this morning…
the coloured pens behind the woman have losttheir colour and turned grey... and the child in the painting behind the womanhas disappeared… and she’s right behind you!... ok, she's not… but you looked. don’t pretend you didn’t. 6. hanging with friends ah, there's nothing quite like hanging outwith your friends. we have another 5 differences between thetwo. original on the left, the edit on the right.
this is probably the most difficult one wehave, so definitely take your time. there is some really cheeky edits here thatyou might not realise until we tell you, so please don’t start raging in the comments. we’re gonna make it easier on ourselvesas well by giving these three guys names, so we can identify them better. from left to right we have phil, jay and bob. that should be enough time, here's what youmissed. poor old phil has pulled a “van goghâ€and lost one of his ears… jay’s finger, the one that’s pointing,is just that little bit longer.
i know, i know, it’s so hard, but it’sabout to get worse… cos jay’s eyes… they’ve been swappedaround. if you look closely, they are looking in oppositedirections… bob’s beer has changed, from beer to… i don’t know, apple juice? apple juice is green isn’t it? and last, but not least, bob has dyed hishair from a fiery red to a nice shade of purple. 5. london
london’s calling. it says there are 5 differences between thetwo pictures. the original one is on the left. oh… london hung up on me. that’s a song by the way. by “the clashâ€. it’s pretty good, you should check it out. anyway, the answers.
the airplane in the top corner wasn’t therebefore… the time on big ben is different… the number on the big red bus is different… the man walking on the bridge is wearing adifferent shirt... and the very top of the lantern on the bridgeis missing. 4. the athlete here we are with a still from a hurdles race. the image on the right is the original, withthe left being the edit.
there we go, got another one where it’sswapped. 5 more differences. get to it guys. remember, you can pause if needed, it’dcertainly be helpful to get a better “lay of the land†so to say. you ready? let's go over them. the runner’s number had changed from 151to 15… the soul of her shoe has changed from redto purple…
the blue banner on the fence behind her ismissing the yellow highlights that form the silhouette of a leg. the letter “d†is missing from the signon the hurdle and a real sneaky one, the runner is missingher little finger. 3. the distraction a man with a hat and woman with… a wonderfulpersonality, are sitting on bench in a mall. but what are the 6 differences between these2 images. the real one is on the left, with the realone on the right once again.
and you keep your eyes on the prize therebuddy. you know who you are! ready when you are. the white smudge on the table is gone… the bag between the woman’s legs is missingone of it’s black arrows… the chair next to the man is missing one ofit’s railings… the man’s foot has disappeared… the black and white pattern on the blue bagis missing… and the woman’s bracelet is missing.
and that’s as close as you’re getting. swiftly moving on. 2. underwater class everything’s better, down where it’s wetter. take it from me. this is the coral reef everybody, or at leasta little corner of it. 6 differences again guys and girls. original on the left.
you know the drill. did you know that fish don’t actually have3 second memories. thought we’d throw in a little fact foryou. now stop treading water and lets dive intothis. the blue fish has turned a shade of orangeyred… the male diver’s collar has also changedto this orangey red colour… the stingray is missing it’s gils… the school of fish in the lower right corneris missing one of its pupils. in the first picture, there are 8, but inthe 2nd, there are 7...
a stingray in the background is missing… and finally, the black fish on the left ismissing two of it’s yellow stripes. only one left, so let's get on with it. 1. the scottish moar we finish our little game in the cloudy fieldsof scotland with this “bonny lass†sitting upon some rocks. 6 differences, the left is the original. you know what to do.
alright, here’s the answers. her sleeve has turned from green to orange… there is a thicker orange stripe on her sock… said sock is longer than it was before… one of the stones has disappeared… there is an additional tree along the left… and last, but not least, her lips are nowpurple. and there you have it, we hope you’ve enjoyedthis video. tells us what you think in the comments below.
and more importantly, tell us if we’ve missedanything. we tried our hardest to find all the differences, but even we can make mistakes, we’re only human after all. and until next time, have yourself a lovelyday.

can jewelry be cursed
{gentle piano music plays} (becky) so how'd it happen? (chuck) well the little guy was really moving. heading aroundsecond going to third. julie's like go! go! i'm like stay on second, get back. see i saw the short-stop catch the cut off. i knew jonny wouldn't make it without some kind of small miracle. yeah, well?
the third baseman catches the ball close to the base. so he decides to slide head first. hits his finger right in the kids mit. bending the fingers back, breaking the pinky finger pretty bad. (becky) oh, that's horrible. poor little guy. is he going to be alright? (chuck) well, he'll be okay. it hurt pretty bad but, he's a tough little guy. so we go to the doctor and he puts a splint on it. away we went. no more baseball for awhile. (becky) well yeah. (chuck) plus we've told him don't slide head first. the coach and i have told him and told him. i don't know what made him do it. (tyler) you know this is fun and all. and you know what? i'm really sorry about the little guy. really!
but can you two talk about the marvels of little league someplace else!? thank you very much! (sarah) yeah, we're real happy with how ritchie's been doing. his whole life has been a roller-coaster. right now he's at the top. so we enjoy it while it lasts. (brenda) that's good. that little guy has been such a blessing to us. it gives me that much more peace about tomorrow as well. you know?
(brenda) oh, that's right. ritchie has another surgery tomorrow. you seem to be doing pretty good with it. (sarah) yeah? (brenda) yeah. (brenda) how's tyler? (sarah) well, still having challenges with it you know. dealing with all the operation with little or no change. it's hard for him. i think he expects ritchie to come out of this operation running and ready to take on the world.
but he knows that's not going to happen. (brenda) yeah. so he hides the fact that he will never be a normal kid. let alone an adult. i think he finds his own mortality ending. someone to carry on his name. (brenda) i think i know what you mean. doug and i have kind of talked about that a little bit. (sarah) really? (brenda) yeah.
just ah...about zach. he struggles with it. but, uncomfortable. tyler needs something to change.he's just not gonna be able to make it much longer. (brenda) yeah. (ritchie) i'm riding the animal, mama. i'm riding! (wrangler 1) you're doing a good job ritchie. we're proud of you. (wrangler 2) ride em cowboy. (wrangler 1) good job, yeah. i think he needs a sign. something that tells him, everything is going to be alright. you know. why are you worrying about your boy
you are one of the strongest people i know. such a good attitude. and you have been a huge inspiration to me and zach of course. you've helped us change to somehow understand why things are the way are and i really can't thank you enough. (sarah) oh yeah? (brenda) yeah! well you guys have helped me out a lot too. (brenda) thanks.
(sarah) hey! how you guys doing? (wrangler 1) hey how are you? good. how's our little guy? (wrangler 1) oh, he is so awesome. he's doing such a great job. so how's my little boy doing? (ritchie) i ride-ed. i ride-ed good mama. (everybody) yes you did. you are awesome. i'm proud of you. (wrangler 1) yeah. we are too. it's just amazing how well he's doing. (sarah) he's pretty special to me.
look, i can thanks you guys enough. i know it means so much for him to ride something other than his wheel chair. (wrangler 1) i can imagine. (wrangler 2) that was fun! (wrangler 3) did you have a lot of fun? (wrangler 1) did you enjoy it? (all laugh in agreement) (sarah) boy, oh boy! did you have an exciting day. did you have fun ritchie? did you have fun?
(ritchie) yes! i got to ride the animal, mama. i know. i'm so proud of you ritchie. you know we have a really big day ahead of us tomorrow again. but, we know who will be watching out over us tomorrow. don't we? we know who this is. who is this ritchie? (ritchie) that's jesus, mama. (sarah) that's right. we know he's watching over us right now. don't we? should we say our prayers?
(ritchie) yes. we got to say them. (sarah) anything you want to add dad? (tyler) i don't know... just a... a small miracle. how about a small miracle, that would be nice. (sarah) alright. lets pray ritchie. dear god we thank you for the small miracle that you're going to be performing in ritchie's body tomorrow. dear lord. and we thank you so much for guiding the surgeon's hands tomorrow, and giving tyler and me peace knowing that you are going to be working through this situation for your good.
we thank you so much for all the blessings you've given us. in jesus' name i pray, amen. (dr. ryan) hi, sarah. how are you? (sarah) good! (dr. ryan) hi tyler, good to see you. (tyler) good to see you doctor. (dr. ryan) this is terry. he was the anesthesiologist during the operation. (sarah) how's ritchie? (tyler) yeah, how did it go? (dr. ryan) why don't we just have a seat, shall we. you are going to be happy to know that the operation was a complete success.
we were able to pinpoint the damage and go in and do the necessary repairs. as expected, it was completely routine. your boy is fine. he's a real fighter. however, we had one small problem. problem? your boy is fine...but we lost ritchie during the operation. what? legally he was dead (sarah) my god, what does that mean? (tyler) what are you saying?!
we got him back. but it was almost as if, he decided to come back to us. i've seen a lot of these things in the operating room. but this was different. your boy is different. it was as if there was some spiritual or supernatural feeling in the room. we all felt it. (tyler) wait. wait wait. what do you mean? supernatural? what is this!? did you get goosebumps!? (sarah) tyler!
or did you feel all warm and fuzzy inside while my son was dying on the operating table!? what!? (dr. ryan) it was nothing like that! we had done everything we could. for your son. but... we had no logical reason to believe that everything was going to turn out as well as it did. and yet, we felt it. we all felt it. (tyler) i don't believe this. you're suppose to be a doctor. (dr ryan) but there are certain things that go beyond what we can do as doctors. and it went beyond in this particular case. (tyler) the goose bumps?
(dr. ryan) we don't have any explanation for it. it's feeling something that let us know that ritchie was going to be okay. when can i take my son home? well, he's gonna have to be here for a coupledays. he's in recovery right now. he is coming out of the anesthesia. you can probably see him in another hour or so. he's fine, don't worry about it. it's going to be okay. come on ritchie. it's jesus. come on who is this, ritchie?
come on, you can say it. who is this ritchie? it's jesus. (ritchie) that's not jesus, mama! (tyler) what'd you say big guy? that's not what he looks like daddy! how do you know this ritchie? i seen him. i seen him. face to face. oh my baby. my precious baby.
god thank you so much for being with us. for blessing us so much with ritchie. he is so special. thank you lord. my precious baby. do you know what this means? i know exactly what this means. it means that god meant this to happen. for everything to happen to ritchie, so that you will know that everything is going to be okay. no matter what we think.
you know what sarah? i have not been putting you or ritchie first. and ah...i'm really sorry for that. okay. after all, we don't know how long he's going to be with us. tyler! (tyler) it's true. (sarah) don't say that. it's true. i mean if he hadn't made it through that operation i don't know what i'd do. i couldn't live with myself if he hadn't made it through. i don't know what i'd do without ritchie or even you. i mean...you're everything to me. you've held this family together, you know.
it's like ritchie has a purpose for his life. yeah. you're right. i love you babe. (becky) tyler, he wants these done by the 4:30 meeting. oh, thank you. did you just say thank you? where's the normal, "blank blank blank, tell the boss he knows what to do with those papers?" i...i don't know. okay then.
(tyler) hey, becky. do you have a second? (becky) sure, tyler. you know, you can always talk to me. i know you never really have before, but... (tyler) thank you. you know...last night, sarah and i experienced one of the strangest things ever in our live. i always thought that i was being punished for something i had done. that i was cursed. that god turned his back on me and gave me a son that... a son that just wasn't right.
i know that's not the case. last night, he taught me something. if you know someone who has a child who is developmentally impaired, like ritchie, or is too young to make a conscious decision, an aborted or miscarried baby, god is watching over them. they are his children. i want you to take joy in knowing that they are safe. no matter what we think, no matter what happens to them,
jesus is with them. {{{two years later}}} (sarah) okay, he'll look good in that. alright, i think i'm almost done here, if you want to go get him. (tyler) okay. (tyler) sarah. tyler, where's ritchie? where's ritchie!? tyler!? oh my god! my ritchie! (sarah crying) oh my god, ritchie!
oh my ritchie! (crying fades. somber music plays) (tyler) thank you all for coming here today. sarah and i thank you. it means a lot. some years ago, i prayed that... well i prayed for a small miracle. and my son touched the face of god. now... he's standing with jesus.
so i have to ask you not to to mourn or cry for sarah and i and ritchie. because, my son has finished his game. he's made it to home base, and he's cheering us on! he's saying, "come on dad. you can do this. you can make it. don't stop on first or second! don't get tagged out on third! make it on home! win this game because you are victorious! i'm cheering for you dad. cheering for you dad!" let us pray
that we can find that same joy and victory... to win our game. lets pray. (music changes, gentle and uplifting) (tyler's prayer) jesus, i just thank you for ritchie. that we can honor him today. and i thank you for that light that you showed me, through him. because i would never, i could never be the same without him. thank you lord. i thank you that he's up there with you right now.
and he is safe in your arms. jesus, i thank you because, you are always watching over us and you're always there. thank you god. for always being there with us. and being there now. in jesus name. amen.

can jewelry be an investment
the question was how to cast jewelry. so forthe next few minutes, we're going to go through the entire process and i'm going to show youa process called centrifugal jewelry casting and this is how we do it. we're going to dowhat we call "sprue the wax" and this right here is the sprue, and it's a passage waywhich allows the wax to escape the mold and the metal to get into the mold. so what i'mgoing to do here is i'm going to heat this rubber base up. i'm going to stick this waxpattern right in here, and let it harden. before i actually attach this wax to thisrubber base, i weighed this wax because there is a very specific weight ratio of the weightof wax to the weight of metal, because you have to know how much metal it's going totake, whether it's gold or silver, eighteen
carat, fourteen carat, that you need to knowhow much metal it's going to take to cast. so now i'm going to put this sleeve over itthat's called a flask. now, as we're mixing this investment compound, it's actually introducingair into the compound and we need to remove all of the air because we need a totally air-freecompound. and how we're going to do that is by use of a vacuum chamber. we're going totake our compound, and you can start to see thee air bubbles starting to rise. we needto get rid of all of those. we're going to place it under a bell jar on a vacuum table, hit the switch, and now we're going to start to remove the air from this investment compound.okay, now you can see thee investment start to rise as the air is being drawn out of it,and it's going to start to boil, and it's
going to get to a very vigorous roll. nowright here, this whole system is on a shaker table where you can get aggressive and knockthat air bubbles free. alright now, we're going to pore this investment, and here'sour wax pattern in the flask, we're going to pour it in, but we're not going to quitefill the mold up. now this time, i want to tap it lightly because there's wax patternsinside the flask. i don't really want to get aggressive. and now, i'm just going to setit aside for an hour and fifteen minutes, and when it hardens, we're going to put itin the oven. we're going to set this flask, which is now fully hardened, we're going toset it in the oven, and now i'm going to bake this for about six hours, and the wax willnow go out the sprue. the oven is going to
go to about fifteen hundred degrees, whichis going to melt the wax, the wax will just exit through the sprue and just burn up inthe oven, and it's going to leave a hollow cavity of thee exact impression of the waxpattern inside this plaster mold and our next step will be to take it out of the oven aftersix hours and then we're going to put it in a centrifugal casting machine, and we're actuallygoing to force the gold into that cavity. so far, we've injected a rubber mold, we'veinvested a flask, we've casted and we've quenched it and now, this is where we are. so now,we need to make this into a piece of jewelry and here's what goes on next. first thingi'm going to do is i'm going to cut the sprue off. alright, next we're going to take a file, and file the sprue down. now i'm going to
switch to a round file, and i'm going to dothe inside of the ring. now that the ring's been filed, now we're going to switch to justa sand paper. it's wrapped around about a one inch square stick and what i'm going todo is now take and sand out my file marks. now we filed the inside, filed the outside, sanded the outside, now we're ready to take it to final polish. now we've moved back tothe polishing room and now what we're going to do is put a high polish on this ring wejust made.and that is how you make gold jewelry.

i certainly consider my company to be theleader in terms of using contemporary metals or alternative metals, whatever you want tocall it. we don't use titanium we don't use tungsten, we're not just machining a ringto machine it, we're doing things with beautiful pattern and actually creating the metals thatwe're working with. the first ring line that we actually came out with and that startedall of this was meteorite rings. we didn't invent the meteorite ring, there have beenpeople making them of real basic quality meteorite without any lining. we'll buy slabs or we'llbuy whole meteorites, we actually have a big whole meteorite in the other room, and thenwe do a tremendous amount of processing to this. that's sorta the secret sauce of whatwe do here so i'm not going to say exactly
what we do, but we go through many steps offorging and it really helps enhance the corrosion resistance; we're unique in that aspect. i'veseen a lot of meteorite rings that are copies of our stuff that have been on white waterrafting trips and seen how they rust and look terrible, and our meteorite rings don't. sowe do a lot of work to that, we combine it with high karat gold or we combine it withplatinum, palladium and other materials and that's how we created our meteorite ring line.while i was working with that i read a book or two and found some references to mokumegane. mokume gane: japanese technique, wood grain metal. it's something that we've reallycome to specialize in. it's multiple layers of precious metals or metals that have beenlaminated together that are then manipulated
to yield a pattern. i firmly believe the qualityof our mokume is really great. we've done a super job of combining the techniques ofmetalsmithing with fine jewelry manufacturing. our polishes are really excellent, our techniquesthat we use and the approach that we take to manufacturing is actually very jewelryend of the spectrum and not metalsmith end of the spectrum, but it took a long time.in order to make just basic mokume, just small pieces for making rings, it took me abouttwo years to figure out in a way that we could repeat it and do a good job of it. as a sideline to that i've always been interested in damascus steel, i've bought some pieces, i'vemade a few knives in my time, and i started working with it. it's a very interesting materialbecause it doesn't have to be as expensive
as the mokume gane. steel is much less expensiveso it can give somebody a lot of pattern for a lot less money than what we charge for themokume gane. of course it's no precious metal component, i really like the precious metalcomponent of things, i think it says a lot about the unity of someone with wedding.

jessica desvarieux: welcome to the real newsnetwork. i'm jessica desvarieux in baltimore. last week, washington, d.c., mayor vincentgray vetoed a living-wage bill that had been passed by the city council in july. the largeretailer accountability act requires retailers with corporate sales of $1 billion or moreoperating in d.c. locations of at least 75,000 square feet to pay their employers no lessthan $12.15 an hour. now joining us to discuss the d.c. city councilvote that took place on tuesday is mark brenner, who is the director of labor notes. thanks for being with us, mark. mark brenner: great to be here, jessica. thanksfor having me.
desvarieux: so, mark, in july the d.c. citycouncil passed the living-wage bill. essentially they got eight votes. but in order to passit this time around, they need nine. do you anticipate them being able to muster up enoughsupport to get this passed? brenner: quite the opposite. i think all the,you know, speculation is in the other direction, that they're going to actually lose some supportand that some of the people who voted in favor the first time are going to peel off in theveto override vote that's taking place. so, you know, all indications are that this isgoing to fail and that vincent gray is going to prevail, he's going to--you know, his overridewill stick. desvarieux: and if this fails, what will therepercussions be, especially for everyday
people? brenner: well, i think it says two things.number one, it really, you know, continues a disturbing trend that i think we've seenin other cities, chicago most notably, where big retailers, particularly walmart, are throwingtheir weight around and continue to be able to muscle the politicians at the local levelinto, you know, kind of a development policy that fits with their corporate agenda. sothat, of course, you know, just signals more corporate control of our political system, which is a bad thing for everyday folks. and, of course, the people who would havebenefited from this--you know, walmart is the largest corporation in the country. they'rethe second-largest corporation in the world.
they make over half a trillion dollars insales every year. they made over--almost $60 billion in profits last year. this is a companythat has--you know, they're swimming in money, and they're keeping it mostly for themselves.i mean, it's no surprise that the walmart heirs are, you know, three or four of thetop ten richest people in the country. and this is really just another indication ofthe sort of 1 percent versus the 99 percent, a company that doesn't even pretend that itcan't afford to pay $12.50 an hour. it just says, we don't have to, and we're going touse our political muscle to make sure that that stays true. desvarieux: and then what do you make of thatargument that consumers at the end of the
day will be paying more if walmart were topay its workers a living wage? what do you make of that? brenner: well, it's interesting you broughtthat up, jessica, because this is something that in another life when i was a researcherat the university of massachusetts we spent a lot of time looking at, what would be theimpact on consumers of living-wage ordinances, particularly for, you know, retail employerslike this. and there was a study about two years agolooking at this question about walmart nationally, like, what would actually happen if walmartwere forced to pay $12 an hour to all of their workforce, their national workforce. firstthing that we found in this study was that
it would benefit a whole lot of people. there'salmost 900,000 workers that work for walmart and make less than $12 an hour, and it wouldraise wages by almost $3.2 billion, which sounds like a huge number, right, $3.2 billion.first we've got to point out that it's less than a quarter of walmart's profits for lastyear. it's actually less than 20 percent of their profits, which were close to $16 billion.but even more important for consumers, it only adds up to about 1.1 percent of all thesales that the company recorded. so on average, raising wages to about $12 an hour at walmartwould really only raise costs by about $0.45 per shopping trip for walmart customers. so, you know, it's one of those situations,as we see with living-wage ordinances generally,
where the benefits are very concentrated, the costs are very dispersed. so it's really kind of a win-win. unfortunately, as we saidbefore, politically walmart is making sure that this is not going to happen. desvarieux: okay. and we should note thatthe d.c. public seems to be in favor of this living-wage bill. there was a survey recentlythat came out done by the hart research associates. they found that 58 percent of city residentssupported an override of gray's veto, while only 35 percent thought the veto should stand.so, mark, there are those that argue still that this bill is really more about tryingto harm walmart than really giving people a living wage, and some are even arguing thatcompetitors like giant and target, safeway,
and employers like that should be paying thatliving wage as well and the focus should really be on raising the minimum wage across theboard. what do you make of that? brenner: well, they're not mutually exclusive,of course, jessica. i'm all in favor of raising the city minimum wage. i know city counselortommy wells has actually suggested raising the minimum wage to $10.25 in the district.and i think that that couldn't happen fast enough. i mean, frankly, i've been involvedin the living-wage movement since the mid-1990s. you know. and after 15 years, i hate to saythat that we're still talking about, you know, $8, $9, $10 an hour. it's really unbelievablethat we've been working on this for so long and we're still asking for so little. so ithink, you know, the faster we can get up
to something closer to $15 or $20 an hour, which is what it really would cost, you know, what you'd really have to pay someone to actuallyafford to live in the district above the poverty line, you know, and in any kind of reasonablewhat you would call, like, living-wage job. that's what it would take. so i'm all in favorof raising the city-wide minimum wage. but i did want to say, in terms of is thisreally just a sort of, you know, punish walmart kind of city council ordinance, i disagree.i think that the standards are very transparent. we're going after big box retailers. i mean, these are some of the biggest companies in the country, in the world. they've made, youknow, outsized profits off of us, the consumer, for years and years and years, and they'reputting very little back into their workforce.
so it's about time that they, you know, didtheir share. and i think that as far as local businessesthat are already, you know, above the sales threshold and above the square footage threshold, they're going to be affected by this too. they just have a longer phase-in period, aboutfour years. but what nobody likes to talk about is thefact that a lot of these companies may not actually have to pay any more at all, becausethey're already unionized, you know, which is true of a lot of grocery stores, not somuch retail. and this is really just about in some ways leveling the playing field betweenthose companies which have already, you know, sort of figured out that you can run a successfulbusiness and pay people a living wage, and
companies like walmart could say, oh, youcan actually make a lot more in profits by, you know, going the low road and paying people$8.25 an hour. desvarieux: okay. well, thank you so muchfor joining us, mark. brenner: great to be here, jessica. thanksfor having me. desvarieux: and thank you for joining us onthe real news network.

this is watch your style and my name's eric. today i'm going to be going over a topic thatis not necessarily in any way, shape or form related to watches; but i get a lot of phonecalls and questions about it. and being born and raised in miami, i happento know a lot about it. i have a lot of experience, and that is, the cuban link chains. so, the cuban link chain. i've heard it calleda curbed chain. i've even had a phone call and someone say that it's a franco chain. i don't know what everybody else calls it.we call it the cuban link chain. it's a very traditional design. been aroundfor a long time. it's something that's also
going to be around for a long time becauseit's a very traditional style. i don't know if you guys remember that erawhen all those chains with those exotic links were around...2003, 2000, that era. i neverreally liked them. i always stuck to the cuban link chain. i always liked it. i've had acuban link chain since i was 12 years old. and that being said, there's a lot of stylesof cuban link chains. it really just depends who's making it for you and how it's made.that's a very important part also. is how it's made. now, as much as i would like this video toturn into an episode from the discovery channel of how it's made, i don't have enoughtime or we don't really want to get into that.
but i'm going to go over a couple of littlebit of the views, what is it that you want to look for, and what makes a high qualitycuban link different than a cheap cuban link chain. so a cuban link chain can be pretty much madeout of silver. you can get them in platinum, 14k, 18k, 10 karat as well, also white gold, rose gold, yellow gold. however you want it, it can be made. it also depends on the weight. a lot of peoplesell it by pennyweight, some people sell it by grams. i like to stick to grams, just becauseit's a lot more simpler for people to understand it. and cuban link chains, besides quality,it's all about size.
some guys like the big ones. they want 250grams all the way up to a half a kilo, which is 500 grams. those are really big chainsguys. i wear daily a 130-gram, 7-mm, 18-karat. i for one like 18k chains. i recommend that the minimum youshould go is 14 karat. ten karat is a lot more affordable, but i don't know. it's justa personal thing. there's nothing wrong with a 10k chain, but i think 14k is a good homebase, especially later on when you go to sell it. if you want to melt it down, just in case. some of the characteristics of a quality cubanlink chain is the finish of the links. in case you guys don't know, the machine-madechains are a little bit different than the hand-made ones. a lot of the really smallones, 5-millimeter in width and under, are
machine made. i'm mostly going to be talkingabout the hand-made, gold cuban links. believe it or not, it's a long-ass process.they start off with the gold. they obviously melt it down into a bar. then they go aheadand they start rolling out into a rod, thinning it out to the point...let's just use thispen as an example. it starts off like this. they go rolling out until it gets longer andlonger to the right gauge. huge process...they coil it up, they cut into rings, they weldit. my god, i can get into this. it's a long-assprocess, but it's hand-made. one of the more important parts is whoeveris building this chain, just like anything else, there's some people that just have betterquality and craftsmanship.
now, the team that i use to make the chainsare the best. i've been doing this for a long time and i've had a cuban link chain madeby everybody in miami. the guy i'm using now is the best. part of that has to do with this is that i'ma psycho with this stuff. i like quality. when the time comes to file down the chain,it needs to be filed right. it needs to be filed at at the right angle. any cuban link chain could be skinnier andwider, and you'll get more bang for your back if you kind of want a thicker chain, but youdon't want it to weigh that much. but in reality, there's kind of like a scale you want to stayin to get the right cuban link chain. always
take what they recommend you. if you wannaall of the sudden get a wider chain skinnier, that's your problem. oh, by the way, they have a lot of other cubanlink chains also that are like those really flat designs, those are nice as well too,but i'm mostly going to stick to the traditional, miami cuban link chain. so the difference between a cheap cuban linkchain and a high quality cuban link chain, let's start off with karat. some of the guys will sell you a 14k cubanlink chain. you think you're saving a bunch of money. you sit there with your calculatorat home. you do all of this math. you're like,
oh, i'm getting it for $26 a gram, butthe problem is you might not be getting 14 karat. when it gets tested, it comes back13.2. stuff like that. see those are part of the factors of high quality. high quality cuban link chains, in 14k forexample, should always be 14 and up, never under. second thing is the finish. to some of youguys, that might not matter. you guys might just want the most gold possible for yourmoney, and i understand that. but me, i'm a quality freak. i want every link to be weldedprecise and filed down evenly. a good way to test a cuban link chain for quality isyou open the chain up and you hold it like
this on its side. a good cuban link chain will once, alwayshang straight, never coil, and if you notice on the side profile, will be evenly filed.there won't be no inconsistencies. to some of the people that doesn't matter. to me,it's a big deal. one thing i want to stress about cuban linkchains as opposed to watches and stuff like that, it's all about what you like. some peoplelike the chain long, some people like them short, so you just gotta get what you like. if you like the chain to look really shortlike you're some type of an egyptian price, then that's what you like. i get it. if youwanna look like young buck in 2001 and have
the chain all the way hanging to your belt, then that's what you like too, man. whatever you like, i'm ok with that. a lot of guys over here in miami, they likethese really big cuban link bracelets. i'm not too into that anymore. it's just not mystyle. like i said, i wear a slim chain. i like something daily. you gotta go with whatyou like. platinum, white gold, rose gold...i thinkthe sky is the limit with the chains. one thing i want to tell you is, it's verypopular to have this huge kilo chain...and let me tell you what my recommendation onthat is. if you ever going to make yourself a kilo chain, a large kilo cuban, 1000 grams, yeah it looks awesome, but my opinion to you,
my recommendation is you should do severalsmall chains. before i do one 2-kilo chain, i'd rather doeight 250-gram chains, because for me, you just get a lot more chains. i just personallylike the look of a lot of chains, instead of one big one. not to mention, if you wantto wear one or two chains one day, that's fine. if you want to wild-out for your birthdayand throw them all on...i just like the look of more chains as opposed to that big chain.that's just my two cents on that. if you liked this video, don't forget to likeand share. also, don't forget to subscribe to our channel. my name is eric, watch yourstyle.

are jewelry appraisals free
in this segment we will talk about a letteror an appraisal that is issued by an individual that is not necessarily in one of the higherechelons of appraising stones. this can be on a local level because there are many manypeople qualified to appraise stones and give written appraisals such as this one and thosecharacteristics are mimicked as to the ones that are issued by the gemological institutesof he world. they should include all the pertinent data that a formal what we call formal certificatewould be. in this case we list all of the dimensions of a diamond to properly identifyit as to its physical characteristics and identify it as to its measurements. it iscalled to us a fingerprint of the stone. there are no two diamonds alike in the world.
are jewelry appraisals accurate
hey, everybody, and welcome... this is chuckboulais, and that's me in the picture in the lower right hand corner of your screen rightthere. today i'm doing a video review on a product called forex diamond ea, by fxautomater, and before we go any further, i want you know that i'm not trying to sell you forex diamondea, so you won't find an advertising link to the product down below in my youtube videodescription, so -- guess what? -- you can put your wallet back in your pocket or purseright now. for those of you who have never seen one ofmy videos before i was in the brick and mortar world of business for over 20 years, and wheni left my old career i did so to start my own business on the greatest landscape theworld has ever known as far as entrepreneurship
is concerned, the world wide web. i thinkthe internet is the greatest place for anyone to start a business today, but when i didthat, i banged my head against the wall for well over a year just trying to figure outthe basics of online marketing, how to make money on the internet, and where me and mypersonal talents and my skill set just might be a good fit. i spent an embarrassing amount of money, tensof thousands of dollars from my own savings and retirement accounts, and almost just asmuch again in lost or wasted time just trying to break into making money on line. i endedup buying almost every kind of internet program, multi-level marketing plan, one on one coachingplan and different online product launch that
you can possibly imagine and each and everyone of them told me that i'd make thousands of dollars a month, and most of those productsand programs almost always promised that i'd do so with very little effort on my part, maybe even with only one or two clicks of the computer mouse, or maybe even totallyon autopilot. so, what i want you to know that i'm not anon-line guru, i'm not a member of any "inner circle", i'm just a normal everyday guy who'smade mostly good decisions, but in all honesty i've made plenty of bad ones too, but aftersome bumps and bruises my online business has finally taken off and i've been seeingsome really great results. now, let me tell you that most of that success has come sincei made a conscious decision to help people
online as much as i can, and since i starteddoing these videos. and once i decided that even if i can keep just one person a day frommaking just one of the same mistakes i made, i think it'll all be worth it, success willbe mine and that's because i truly believe that success comes to those who help others, and who love what they do. you know, during all of that unbelievablylong and painfully expensive personal research that i had to do, the most important thingi found out is that when you're looking into buying any type of product or program that'sbeing offered for sale to you online, remember that it's a business decision so you're goingto want to utilize your business wisdom and your business acumen, just like you wouldwith any other opportunity, or else you're
going to end up being just another victim, and you're going to lose a lot of valuable time and money, and i don't think any of uscan afford to waste one single bit of either one of those valuable resources. if you can always remember to utilize thatbusiness wisdom and that business acumen of yours, and always try to keep in mind thatjust about 90% of products and programs offered for sale online are either really bad fitsfor people and their particular personal talents and skill sets, some of them under deliveron their promises, others are just repackaged old products, and, yeah, maybe still othersare just out and out scams, if you can always remember that you can save yourself a lotof time, money, and energy.
i'm not saying that forex diamond ea is ascam or a bad fit for anyone, not in the least. but i do want you to know a little bit aboutwhat you're getting into right up front, so you can make an informed decision, and youdon't end up throwing money away at yet another product that leads you down a long, dark roadthat just doesn't work out for you, and you find yourself at yet another dead end, allthat much more broke, and losing all of that precious time. so, what is forex diamond ea? forex diamondea is a home based investment trading program and software platform designed to maximizeyour trading profits in the forex investment from home arena. home trading is a very temptingthing to try when you're first trying to figure
out how to make money from home but it's alsovery risky for the uninitiated. although you pay for the purchase of forex diamond ea youwill have to make a sizeable deposit with the house in order to open your trading accountand there will be fees for every single trade you make, whether your trade makes a profit,or whether it loses, so it can be very difficult to make money, and you'll constantly haveto add more money to your trading account unless you make considerable and consistentgains. speaking of cost, the total cost for forexdiamond ea will end up being - are ready? - $797. that's the total cost to you afteryou get past all of the upsells and otos that the developer will try to sell you. an upsellor oto (which stands for one time offer) is
one of those additional, upgrade offers thatpromises to boost the performance of a product like forex diamond ea and help you and yourbusiness grow even more. immediately after you've paid your money at what you think isthe full price of the product, these developers figure that since you've already got yourcredit card out and warmed up, and they've got you to fill in all your credit card andpersonal contact information and you press that "buy now" button, they immediately hityou with an additional offer (and these additional offers are called "upsells"), that will costyou more, and then, whether or not you've bought that one time offer, why not try again,so you're presented with another upsell offer after that, and then maybe even another oneafter that, until by the end of the whole
thing you're not sure all that you've justbought and you really don't understand why you didn't get it all with your original purchaseany way, what you do know is you've got this really bad feeling in the pit of your stomach, you've just spent hundreds of dollars that you don't have -- and with forex diamond ea,it's going to be almost $800 - and you've got a learning curve ahead of you with hoursand hours of studying that just seems completely overwhelming. and the truth is: you really do have to buythese additional offers, these upsells, in order for products like forex diamond ea towork as well as you need it to work in the highly competitive market of online trading.now, just keep in mind that these additional
offers, these upsells are there, because developersdon't think you'll buy their product right up front if they tell you the full price ofthe product right away, no matter how good the product is, or how confident they arein it. they know that you really need help in learning how to make money online, youneed that help badly enough that you're actually willing to pay a lot of money for it, you'reready to buy, and they don't even tell you the actual, full price of the product rightaway. they warm you up by advertising a very basic piece of the product first with a lowinitial offer price, which, psychologically puts you right into that sweet spot of a buyingmode, and then they come back at you over and over, until by the end of the whole lengthyand annoying transaction, your head is kind
of spinning, and you've spent a ton of moneyyou had no intention of spending just 10 minutes ago. if you came here thinking that forex diamondea or forex trading was going to be your answer to financial independence and finally unlockthe secrets to making money from online from home, i want you to know that there are otherand far less expensive and time efficient ways to learn how to make money from home,on the internet, even in your part time if you want, and for free. if you're new to internetmarketing, or you've even been here for a while and you haven't made a whole lot ofmoney, or seen a whole lot of success, or even if you're an established internet marketingprofessional or online day trader who just
wants to make extra money in your part time,i want to share something with you that's really been working gangbusters for me -- infact, no one is more surprised than i am at how well this has been working. after spending all those tens of thousandsof dollars of my hard earned money for all of these so called training packages, onlineproduct launches, tricks and inside secrets, i found a program called instant payday network.now, don't worry i'm not going to ask you to give me any money - that's a promise. so,please, don't go away, and please put your money away, you don't need it, and -- here'sthe real big surprise - i don't want it! what i'm going to tell you about is 100% free.
and right about now, you're probably saying,"come on, chuck, now you're just trying to sell me into your program just like everybodyelse out there." and i'm going to tell you that, no, i'm not selling you anything -- iam trying to tell you about this phenomenal opportunity, but i'm not selling you anythingbecause what i want to tell you about costs 0 dollars and 0 cents. instant payday networkis free unlike the other programs out there, like forex diamond ea, this program is free.it's not $47.00, it's not $97.00, it's certainly not $797.00, in fact it's not even a dollar,so i'm not here to sell you anything. now, what happens with instant payday is verysimple - you get paid $58 whenever anyone comes into instant payday and completes thefree program. the system was created by a
guy by the name of jeff buchanan, and youcan see his pictures right there. he's an ordinary guy like you and me, i've met him,i know him, and he's a really good guy, and he's very, very smart! jeff's system the way he's set it up he actuallyhas no buy in fees or upfront costs whatsoever . . . there are zero website fees, zero maintenancefees and there are no hidden fees later on. there are no upsells after you get in! onceyou're in, it's still free! you don't need to learn how to set up a website, how to blog, how to do seo. you don't need to know how to do any of that stuff, folks, it's reallythat simple. now, i do want to put your mind at rest abouta few things:
instant payday is not an mlm. you don't have to bug your friends and family, like you would, say with amway or avon or nutrisystem, or all those other companiesthat we're all so inundated and pressured to sell for. there's no cold calling -- you never haveto pick up a telephone and call some unsuspecting stranger that you've never met, off a listthat maybe you had to buy, and you certainly don't ever have to go out and see anyone faceto face! ever! and there's no product or inventory to ship. so, what do you get with the instant paydaynetwork, ladies and gentlemen?
well you get a free, complete turnkey marketingsystem, and that marketing system includes: your choice of not one, but 3 complete freecapture pages, and each one of those capture pages has a tested 35% to 50% conversion rate, with no website hosting fees either. you get a free, complete automated sales funnel. you get a free email auto responder. and you get all of the free training you needto start making money right now. and, oh, yeah, did i mention that it's 100%free to get started? now, i do want to go back and talk a minuteabout this capture page, the ones with the tested 35%-50% conversion rate? remember,if you had to purchase this tested capture
page somewhere else to promote your productor program it's going to cost you at least $25 to $30 a month just in website hostingfees. and if you wanted to have one designed, built and tested for you by a professionalso that it was as effective as the one jeff gives us for free that'd be about $200 a year. the email auto-responder: if you had to purchasethat on your own that by itself would cost you as much as $50 a month if you went witha company like aweber or constant contact or any one of the hundreds of companies outthere that you'd have to spend all that time researching in order to evaluate which onewas best for you, not to mention how long it would take you to learn to set it up andmake it run as effectively and efficiently
as this one, but jeff's already done all thatand he provides it to you for free. he's written all of the product introductory emails, allof the follow up marketing emails, and he's put them in that autoresponder so that they'reall sent out automatically at the appropriate intervals -- you don't even have to writean email with the instant payday system! jeff does tons of video, audio and writtentraining here himself and that training is excellent! it's second to none. he'll takeyou from the ground up and teach you the basics to the advanced techniques of online marketing, and the best and fastest ways to capitalize with this system, and he's not going to chargea dime for any of that either. in addition, you're going to get personalaccess to me -- i'll help you with your training
and i'll coach you, and i'll support you personally, and that's because i'm building a really great team and i want to help my people out. onceyou sign up and qualify for the instant payday network system, i give you my phone numberand my personal email address so you're not just left out there twisting in the wind andhaving to fend totally for yourself. and i can assure you that i'm not going to chargeyou anything, why would i do all of this? because i love what i do! i love instant paydaynetwork, and i'm grateful for what it's done for me! this is a free system that you can do at homeladies and gentlemen -- you can even do this in your part time if you'd like. i'm makingover $5,000 a month with instant payday after
only a few short months in the program, andi personally know people making $10,000 to $20,000 a month with the instant payday networksystem. now, remember: the reason why instant payday stands alone from the other programsout there is because it costs nothing to join to get started -- zip, nada, zilch -- andyou make $25 to $58 for each person that signs up for free offers. the other great thing about instant paydaynetwork is that you're paid your money from multi-million dollar corporations. this isall part of their huge advertising budgets that they've allocated and already set moneyaside for just this kind of advertising, and that means you don't have to rely on the averageinternet product developer to put his hand
into his pocket and give you money wheneverhe remembers or thinks about it. and this type of compensation system means that youget paid daily with the instant payday network system -- i get paid every day with instantpayday! so, the question i guess i have for you atthis point is: should you spend money for any other online product when you could actuallydo instant payday for free? sometimes making money is simple. i don't think we have tooveranalyze this one too much. if you know another program online that's free to getstarted? a program that has the potential to make you as much as $10,000 to $20,000a month, i would encourage you to go for it and embrace it, my friend.
on the other hand if you can't find a programlike that online, you just found one. you don't need to pull out your wallet and spendmoney on yet another expensive product with untested, untried or unsure promises. youhave an opportunity right here to get started finally making some real money online. youcan start making money within 24 to 48 hours, and all you have to do is click the link rightbelow this video. right below my video there's a link on the left hand side in the videodescription, you won't be disappointed. so, go ahead and click one of the links thereright below the video, as a matter of fact i've put 2 or 3 links down there right belowthe "like" symbol . . . that "thumbs up" symbol youtube gives you? you want to look for thelink that says dignityrestore.com, because
that's what i want you to do: i want you torestore your dignity and start making money online the way you deserve! get into and work the instant payday program, you won't regret it, i promise. so, go ahead and click the link; give yourself a break.click the link below, which will take you to a brief video done by jeff buchanan, andwhen that's done, i'll see you on the other side.
ancient jewelry had extraterrestrial origin

human civilization has come a long way. over the past two and a half thousand years we live in a modern computer age get amazing the ancient greeks created a type of computer precise mechanical clocks and attack your measuring device over 2,000 years ago these devices have been hidden for thousands of years but are now
uncovered on modern marvels into discoveries one in ancient discoveries we will travel back in time to discover the amazing ancient roots of technologies we like to think of as modern new research is beginning to suggest that many of the inventions of the last 200 years may in fact have already been
known the ancient greeks and romans much of what we have recently discovered we may in fact have just rediscovered the greeks and romans were also intensely practical people many of the things which they devise plan that invented preceded by 2,000 years things that we like to think of as modern at
the heart of this story of ancient achievement lies a mysterious and arcane machine one so complex that many have refused to believe it could have been built by the ancient greeks hidden for centuries beneath the mediterranean sea in case in thick corrosion it remained an enigma until 20th century science glimpse inside
what they saw inside astonished them a massive gears and cogs a machine but what was it for and who had created for a hundred years it has been a written which intrigued but baffled those who tried to understand the mysterious object known as the antikythera mechanism
but now finally its story can be told that story began just over 100 years ago in the ear 1900 it was early spring when captain condos and his crew of sponge divers found themselves sheltering from a storm miles off course by the little greek island of antikythera as the weather cleared the captain decided to make the most of his unplanned stop by
diving in the deep clear waters off the island that's you the water was deep some 200 feet but then deep water was where the best sponges were found but so far down there always is the danger a diver might return to the surface with the notorious ben's once in the water the diver started his first descent
look what awaited him on the bottom were not sponges as he looked around he saw what appeared to be dead bodies scattered in all directions terrified he quickly signal to be pulled back to the boat some thought the diver was mad perhaps he had the bends but the truth was far far stranger than that
two thousand years ago another ship had sailed these waters on its way from roads to deliver a precious cargo to a wealthy roman citizen oh just like the sponge divers this ship that also been caught in a storm she too was driven far off course to the island of antikythera
but this ship was not destined to survive here she sunk and here she still lay captain condo sent another diver to investigate the wild story of the bodies what had first appeared to be dead bodies were in fact the most beautiful marble and bronze statues imaginable the remnants of that ancient wreck
along with the statues other treasures such as decorated greek causes and jewelry were winched to the surface it was the find of the decade perhaps the century and the breathtaking statues made front page news one of the most perfect bronzes recovered was named the antikythera youth the piece was universally acknowledged as a work of
genius but the greatest work of genius from the wreck still lay unrecognized this rusting lump of corrosion held the key to one of the greatest periods in human history the hellenistic period and perhaps the greatest achievement of that time two-and-a-half thousand years ago the
mediterranean was a place where science philosophy and art flourished the greeks known as he leans were living in what many regard as a golden age they had invented democracy opened up the fields of mathematics and science and introduced the world to philosophy they were inquisitive and invention no different in many ways from us today
in trying to understand their world they had created this strange machine all their 21st century descendants had to do was work out what they had created it for part of that answer late far from antikythera in a london museum display case 20 years ago michael wright curator of engineering at the science museum in london came upon another mysterious
ancient mechanical device although much less complex there were similarities with the antikythera mechanism we call this the presentaion sundial calendar we think it takes from about 500 ad it was a mechanical calendar which shows the passing of days indicated by the age of the moon within the month the gear wheels look
surprisingly modern complicated mathematics and a detailed knowledge of astronomy would have been necessary to create such an object michael wright decided to build a model of the device to explore how it would have worked the model shows the position of the sun and moon within the zodiac at any given date as well as the age of the moon
this instrument is is much more simple from the antikythera mechanism but what's exciting about it is to have found another instrument very obviously in the hellenistic tradition because of the the greek lettering and also having gear wheels so now we have not just one mechanism that tells us the greeks had gears we have to
we've doubled the evidence although similar it is estimated that the sundial calendar only had eight gearwheels where the antikythera device had at least 29 and perhaps up to 70 allowing for much more complicated calculations could the antikythera mechanism also be a mechanical calendar one many times more complicated than the
byzantine machine yet over 600 years older who in the ancient world had the ability to design such a complex device the question is baffled expert sentence discovery but there is one legendary figure who could have been its creator the remains of the antikythera mechanism are on display at the national
archaeological museum in athens greece but its original shape or dimension still cannot be determined modern marvels will continue in a moment the inventor of the antikythera mechanism would have to have been an expert in both mathematics and engineering a genius centuries perhaps even millennia ahead of his time
one man who fit that description was archimedes archimedes lived during the hellenistic period in the greek city-state of syracuse on what is today's sicily off the coast of italy during his lifetime the mediterranean was a turbulent war-torn place a world in which his talent for military
invention was put to good use by both his fellow greeks and the aggressive new power of rome that was slowly spreading its tentacles across the mediterranean today he is perhaps best remembered for the revolutionary invention known as the archimedean screw used to move water or seeds uphill but archimedes was also fascinated by
other difficult mechanical problems such as how to accurately measure distances the greatest challenge of all however was to solve the puzzle of what caused the rising and setting of the sun the changing seasons and the strange movements of the moon and planets what in short with the mechanics of time many years earlier archimedes had
traveled across the mediterranean to the most important cultural center of the hellenistic world alexandria egypt alexandria was the most sophisticated place on earth founded by alexander the great it was now ruled by the descendants of one of his generals greek soldiers who had
risen to become pharaohs it was a unique place the meeting point of the age old civilizations of the mediterranean a city of egyptians greeks romans and persians here they combine the wisdom of the pharaohs with the brilliance of greek philosophy to create the intellectual powerhouse of the ancient world and it
was here that the young archimedes would be inspired by the work of a mechanical genius called to cbs he would have a simple but brilliant idea that would literally change time forever to cbs was fortunate to be born in alexandria the place where all the knowledge of the ancient classical world was held in one vast library
a place where the great thinkers of antiquity studied and we're shelf upon shelf held thousands of scrolls recording their work the library was such a famous institution that people came here from all over the world to learn and invent it was here that to see these his revolutionary invention was recorded
and where the young archimedes may first have read of his work cbs is a figure who is often forgotten history yet his work paved the way for a technical revolution the measurement of yes to cbs came from humble beginnings he was the son of a simple barber as a young man he had worked in his father's barbershop in alexandria
inventing simple gadgets such as adjustable mirrors and here he was surrounded by the constant dripping of water which would inspire his great invention to cbs knew that for thousands of years the egyptian had used ordinary water timers to mark the hours of the day the famous karnak water clock is one example
it is a vessel which was filled with water and as it drained out through a spout at the bottom the time could be read as the level dropped markings inside showed the passing hours and allowed the ancient egyptians to measure the passing of time during the day or night but this was still only a timer known in greek times as a club sara not
a constant clock as the water level dropped the water came out more slowly to cbs however saw the solution he realized that if the vessel was always full then the water pressure outflow would always be the same if he could master that he knew he could create an accurate device which would change the world
this then was the challenge he decided to set himself serious saw that the way to simplify the egyptian etc was not to utilized outflow water but to try and update a uniform inflow of water the challenge was to keep the reservoir of the club sidra full at all times and this is how to cbs did it first he added another water tank above the main
reservoir this poured water into the top faster than it could flow out meaning the reservoir was always full and any excess water could just run off into an overflow container the water would always come out of the reservoir at the same speed now to cbs just had to measure it to do this he decided to put another water tank under
the constant outflow in this container he placed a float with a point on top and a scale next to it when the level of the water rose the point of rows at a constant speed it was a stroke of genius to cbs had created the world's first mechanical clock thanks to the dripping water in a barbershop
he had harnessed the power of water and in the process he had become the master of time but measuring hours and minutes was only the start what else could this unique water clock do the answer to that was kept here in the great library of alexandria anyone in the ancient world wanting to
understand time could come here and read to see abuses books which describe the wonderful machines he was now building and a whole new subject he had invented hydraulics before long his clocks were not just dripping taps ornate machines decorated with gilded figures of gods and animals and their mechanics were yet more elaborate to he devised a complex
scale for the hours shown here in white for the day and blue for the night the increasingly complicated series of gear wheels also allowed the scale to rotate very slowly to indicate the days within each month of the year this clock was also now a calendar and automatic day and night month a year cuckoo clock
archimedes was clearly fascinated by to cvs his creations he studied his clocks and used his own genius for invention to continue the work and arabic translation of archimedes work dating back over a thousand years we can see a tantalizing glimpse of his additions to save uses water clock this modern reconstruction shows
archimedes elaborations to the to cvs clock he added a bird who dropped a small stone onto a bell making a clock chimes on the hour the woman is a gorgon with snakes for hair when the bell chimes you look up to see her eyes change color indicating the alexandria today is a busy modern port a new building now stands in place of the
famous library tragically the original library was burned to the ground and with it was lost nearly all the knowledge of the ancient world only a very few ancient texts remain which mentioned to cbs his work we may never know what else he invented has not one single page of his own work survives
so much information has been lost that the cbs has been largely forgotten however there is one legacy of his work one clue which is still standing could this small greek tower hold the key to an ancient secret the dive in which the antikythera mechanism was discovered happen more than 40 years before modern day scuba gear was
invented modern marvels will continue in a moment this unassuming tower tucked away in a corner of athens is one of the best preserved buildings from antiquity its survival almost untouched is a miracle and one due to the fact that for centuries it was believed to be the tomb of the philosopher's socrates and plato but this isn't a tomb carved on its
eight phases are a clue to its real use on each side of warren sculpture of each of the eight wins can still be seen along with a sundial it was actually built finest stronger around 200 years after the death of too serious but is a monument to his genius this building now known as the tower of the winds was the public clock of
ancient athens inside this collar there once stood a huge and complex water clock based on a to cvs design this clock was fed by a constant stream of water which ran from a spring on the acropolis from which the whole population of happens could tell the but this was more than just a clock or even a calendar
some believe this strange building house device that even charted the movements of the sun and moon in relation to the constellations of the zodiac we know the greeks were measuring hours days and months during the time of too serious could it be that they had also started to look above and measure the heavens one man believe the answer may lie in
the cogs and wheels of the antikythera mechanism in 1951 and english physicist derek to solar price decided to find out for himself and examine the mechanism in detail for the first time the solar price travel to happens to look at the mechanism the pieces had lain largely untouched since its
discovery 50 years earlier the device had disintegrated further exposing pieces of the gears which he was able to study he became determined to crack the secrets of the antikythera mechanism the solar price spent much of his time at the national museum of grease in athens probing the secrets of this
ancient enigma something told him that these fragments were the real treasure from the antikythera wreck using new developments in x-ray technology he could now see what its discoverers 50 years before could not looking through the corrosion she was amazed a machine so complex it could
almost be modern he had to know what it was for his meticulous studies of the cogs gear ratios and inscriptions gave him close to the possible purpose of the mechanism remnants of a wooden box which held the device also had greek writing which gave further tantalizing hints using this information to solar price
developed a theory and put together a model of how he believed the antikythera mechanism could have worked he realized the mechanism was an extremely sophisticated device for calculating the relative movements of the sun and moon it also seemed to show the days of the month as lunar phases this all the price had established its
mechanical complexity and knew that the knowledge required to create such a machine was immense he believed that at the front of the mechanism of bronze dial showed the date and positions of the sun and moon a dial at the back would indicate the month possibly within a 12-month year another dial at the back seam to show either a
cycle of 47 months or four years the solar price called the mechanism a calendar computer for anyone in the ancient world such a device would have been invaluable to understand the movement of the sun and moon within the heavens was to look into the minds of the gods many believed then as some do today that
the positions of the sun moon and stars at the time of someone's earth may influence there later life what complex horoscope software does today the antikythera mechanism may have done over two millennia earlier to the priest n astrologers of the day this extraordinary machine could have been a window on the gods but where
could such a divisive come from the solar prize at an extraordinary theory what if machines like the antikythera mechanism were part of municipal clocks powered by the very water clocks that the cds had invented what if they were commonplace in the hellenistic world was this the secret of the tower of the winds not just a sundial or even o'clock
but an automatic model of the movements of the sun and move within the universe the solar price also suggested that the antikythera mechanism was a later copy of one of archimedes machines lost to the world since the destruction of the great library at alexandria this was an intriguing theory which could lead others to try to reveal the
truth about the antikythera mechanism in 1953 jacques cousteau and the crew of the calypso explore the antikythera wreck side when they return in 1973 they found previously undiscovered gold bars modern marvels will continue in a moment the antikythera mechanism mystery continued one man was to read the solar prices work and was to spend the next 30
years pondering his theory when michael right from the science museum first read the paper he was immediately fascinated by the notion that the ancient greeks had complex engineering right decided to go to athens himself to examine and reacts ray the mechanism we got this view with several of the pieces put together and
it helps me to build up a more complete picture of just how the gear wheels were arranged inside the box before it all fell apart although intrigued by the solar prices theory of the antikythera mechanism right believe there was more to the device and the solar price had realized i went back and read gifts from the
greeks again and started to find problems with prices account that's when i resolved i really have to look at things myself but for michael right to understand this strange device he knew he needed to do more than just look at it he needed to try to build one for himself after the solar prices publication many
academic simply refused to admit that the mechanism could be so old the complex gearing seemed to modern how could ancient peoples have calculated and precisely cut the fine teeth on each wheel they asked surely this was either a fake or a later machine that just happened to be lost on the site of the ancient wreck so right
set to work determined to prove them wrong using only tools similar to those available in the ancient world with the greeks knowledge of geometry he set out to copy these elaborate gears in his workshop measuring and cutting gears with only a pair of compasses a metal file and a good eye for detail was not
going to be easy but it was possible after many hours of practice right prove beyond doubt that with patience and skill it could be done you can't deny the evidence that the antikythera mechanism exists when you look at it closely it's very accomplished work both in design and execution
why shouldn't the ancient greeks have done it we know from translations of his work that archimedes was familiar with these types of cards and now it was the study of these gears that was to help solve yet another mystery involving one of his other mechanical marvel's the mystery of the odometer we all use odometers every time we get
in a car it's the device which measures the distance we've traveled but remarkably this device was in use long long the four cars and was crucial to the development of the roman empire odometer was said to have been invented by archimedes while he was working for the roman army it had been decreed that every road should be marked each mile
with a milestone but roman road stretched hundreds of miles so how could they be accurately measured by creating a cart that would accurately calculate distance archimedes solve the problem and the milestones could be laid out this accurate measurement of distance would prove crucial in planning troop
movements and that gave them the edge on her enemies archimedes had set the romans on the path to empire and started a train of events that would ironically lead to his own death today the most famous of roman roads the appian way is still marked in places by the milestones that archimedes machine laid out
but there is a problem with this apparently simple story one that professor andres lee's week from grand engine in holland would eventually solve with the aid of the ghostly x-ray images of the antikythera mechanism as no original survive the only clues to how the odometer worked are a few faded drawings in a renaissance book based on
a description of an odometer by a roman author called the truth eous the drawings look fine on paper the problem is when you try to build them they don't work even leonardo davinci attempted these are his sketches of an odometer which he attempted but could not successfully build
professor sleaze week started to make simple models to see if he could crack the odometer puzzle this was then developed into a quarter sized model and this was a model with a difference where even leonardo had failed please weeks model worked the mechanics are simple as the wheels turn when the vehicle travels a gear
with a single dude pushes around a huge gear with 400 teeth every time the large wheel turns once a small stone would be automatically dropped into a box below the device this allowed miles to be marked after the first punic war by decision of the senate of rome milestones had to be placed a long major bridge and that also
gives an idea who d-santa might have been in this case it means so what was lee's week secret the answer was in the shape of the teeth on the gears while davinci and others had assumed they were square sleaze we could actually seen the pointed teeth on x-rays of the antikythera mechanism changing the shape of those teeth made all the difference
archimedes odometer for so long thought of as just an impossible dream was back and working just as the great man had intended all thanks to that most mysterious of ancient objects the antikythera a device whose true secrets were yet to come to light in may nineteen eighty-three an italian stamp was issued
to honor our communities however the image printed was actually that of our kodama the third a king of sparta from 3rd century bc modern marvels will continue in a moment back in london michael wright was building his working antikythera mechanism model using ancient techniques far more complex than the odometer but
using similar gears this would be the most complete model of the antikythera mechanism ever built as each gear slotted into place it soon became clear to solar price may have got the details wrong but his theory was right the antikythera mechanism was an automated calculating device perhaps even a type of computer
you could call this thing a computer in the sense that you put in some data and it gives you out related data an ancient computer is a difficult concept to imagine yet in many ways that is exactly what the antikythera mechanism is it is astounding to compare it with the machine designed by charles babbage in
the eighteen thirties which is often cited as the world's first computer and the machine which led to our modern high-tech age this was the first modern device which could make automatic calculations the technology is startlingly similar to the antikythera mechanism yet there is two thousand years difference between the
two right believes that the antikythera mechanism was more complex than the solar price imagined and most importantly also showed the changing positions of the planets as well as the sun and moon over time in rights model of the mechanism a knob is turned to set the days and months intricate gearing then moves a series of indicators which
represent the sun moon and levels the knob could be turned every day so the position of the planets could be monitored throughout the year or it could be set to a specific date to show their positions at that time it is in effect a mechanical model of the greek universe today astrologers need a complex computer
program to carry out exactly the function of the antikythera mechanism so good this machine have been created by archimedes himself we know from ancient texts that he built planet area but could he have designed this one is difficult to make a direct connection between the antikythera mechanism and archimedes what we can say
with certainty was the revolution but archimedes pioneered in mathematics and geometry was necessary for those who then invented the antikythera mechanism without archimedes and his advances is difficult to think that the antikythera mechanism could have been invented at all archimedes own life was cut short before
he could finish his revolutionary work on mathematics and mechanics during the roman sacking of his home city of syracuse it is said a roman soldier was sent to find him and bring him back alive and archimedes refused to leave his work the soldier became angry and killed him it was an ironic and for a man who had
done so much to make rome such a formidable fighting force his death marked the beginning of the end of the hellenistic tradition of great invention and science his work however was preserved stored on the endless shells of the great library of alexandria a treasure greater than any the romans
looted from syracuse but even that legacy was not to last the library itself fell victim to war and destruction being burned to the ground several times over the following 800 years eventually most of the collection including much of archimedes work was lost or destroyed in the fires if only the library had survived we may have
inherited the insights of such great thinkers without them we have been forced to reinvent much that we are only now realizing was already known over 2,000 years ago if we had not lost this ancient wisdom how much more advanced might science and technology be today and what else may still lie hidden or
lost from that time without that sudden storm all those centuries ago that each ship might not have foundered taking her cargo of statues pottery and that incredible machine to the bottom of the mediterranean sea if a group of sponge divers had not stumbled upon the rec 2,000 years later the antikythera mechanism might be lying there today
slowly corroding and what other technological marvels from that time might still be awaiting discovery i think that these mentions we have in the literature and this one instrument are just the tips of icebergs showing that there was a great deal more to this tradition the term that between haven't heard about 2,000 years ago there was a
world more advanced and we had dared to believe and more secrets from that time they still live waiting to be discovered ancient discoveries we are only just beginning to understand you can feel it when you go to work when you go to church when you pay your taxes it is the world that has been pulled
over your eyes to blind you from what truth what
